Carter initially studied medicine at St. George's Hospital in London. He entered the Royal College of Surgeons in 1853, and his artistic talent led to work with Henry Gray. They co-authored the first edition of Gray's Anatomy in 1858. Carter later pursued a medical career in India and conducted extensive research on diseases, finally returning to England in 1888. He died in 1897 and is remembered for his significant contributions to the medical field, including his renowned anatomical artwork.
